Xiamen Customs Destroys 490.38 Tons of Illegal Inbound Waste in Harmless Manner
07/30/2018

On July 25, Xiamen Customs entrusted a professional institution with collective destruction of 490.38 tons of waste textile materials that were earlier seized from smuggling. Those waste materials were incinerated in a harmless manner to generate electricity. By estimate, electric power up to 150,000KWH can be generated for one month of normal use by 700 households.

This April, Xiamen Customs officers and Fujian Coast Guard officers jointly intercepted this shipment of illegal inbound waste, which were later identified as import-banned solid waste. According to the seized smuggling suspects, the waste textile materials, after being smuggled by sea into the country, would be made into toy fillings or cleaning cloth, which will become a threat to the people’s health.

After seizing the illegal inbound waste, the Customs timely informed local Environmental Protection Bureau and entrusted a professional institution with the harmless destruction so as to both prevent secondary pollution and effectively utilize resources. The destruction process was estimated to last for 10 days.
