Customs seizure of smuggled-in dried seahorses
Recently in Nanning Customs District, the subordinate Dongxing Customs House cracked a major case of smuggling dried seahorses inward by water. At the scene, the anti-smuggling officers seized 22,082 pieces of dried seahorses, totaling 37.06362 kilograms, captured 4 smuggling suspects, and detained 1 smuggling boat in which the officers also seized 1,295.2 kilograms of sea crabs suspected of being smuggled.
Seahorse (Latin: hippocampus), a kind of small-sized marine animal, is listed in Appendix Ⅱ of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and its dried products are a traditional Chinese medicine of high economic value.
